Thiruvananthapuram: Union Minister for Labour Sahib Singh on October 19 said that a
Bill for the protection of employees in the unorganised sector would be introduced
in the coming Budget session of Parliament.
The Bill would provide for an umbrella legislation to protect unorganised workers.
The government was also trying to downsize the number of existing labour Laws, he
told reporters.
The Centre was also planning to introduce social security cards for those working in
the unorganised sector to ensure that every worker was covered by social security
measures.
"It is difficult even to define a person working in the unorganised sector and this
is not an easy task," he said.
However, the government would strive to pass the Legislation in the next Budget
session itself. A nation-wide discussion would be held on the proposals in the new
National Labour Commission report, he said.
To a question, the minister said he was in favour of a fresh wage board for
journalists. "But first you have to settle the issues among yourselves," he said
referring to the divergent views being expressed on the matter. The issue would be
taken up for consideration during the Budget session of Parliament, he added.
