Bangalore: Karnataka Cabinet on October 19 reviewed the water storage position in
the Cauvery basin reservoirs but took no decision on the issue of release of water
to Tamil Nadu with which it is locked in a bitter legal battle.
"No decision on release," Karnataka Information Minister Kagodu Thimappa told
reporters after the Cabinet meeting, adding that the situation would again be
reviewed on October 22 when the state's next step would be decided.
"The Cabinet reviewed the situation in all its perspectives," he said and maintained
the state's position that it still faced water shortage.
He said that the government had still not finalised the affidavit it has to file
before the Supreme Court, which would take up the Cauvery-related case on October 24.
Karnataka suspended release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu after a farmer ended his
life by jumping into the Kabini reservoir in the midst of Cauvery agitation.
The Supreme Court and the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) have asked the state to
release 9,000 CUSECS but the Karnataka government has stuck to its guns that it is
not in a position to comply with their directives, following which Tamil Nadu has
filed two contempt petitions against Chief Minister S M Krishna and others.
