Manmohan begins crisis resolution mission
Sunday, October 20 2002 18:05 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Veteran Congress leader Manmohan Singh began his crisis resolution mission to iron-out differences with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) for forming a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir with a meeting with his party Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and four independents.

Singh asks reporters to wait and watch his mission Emerging after a brief meeting with the newly elected MLAs of his party, Singh said that he would be meeting PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed later.

Asked whether he had any formula to break the impasse between the two parties, Singh said, "The talks have just begun. Let us see what happens."

To a question what transpired at the meeting and what was the demand of the MLAs, Singh said, "Everyone knows what the MLAs want".

The political affairs committee of PDP would meet after talks between Sayeed and Singh.

State Pradesh congress committee vice president Peerzada Mohammed Sayeed said that the 24 legislators were unanimous that Ghulam Nabi Azad should be the Chief Minister.

The independents and other party (Panthers Party) has extended conditional support to Congress on the condition that Azad should be the Chief Minister, Peerzada Sayeed said.

The legislators emerging from the meeting were vociferous in their support for Azad and one of them even demanded that Congress should stake the claim to form the government with or without PDP.
