Sunday, October 20 2002 06:42 Hrs (IST)

Varanasi: Former Prime Minister V P Singh on October 20 offered to take the initiative in breaking the stalemate between Congress and PDP (People's Democratic Party) over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Singh said he had held talks in this regard with PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed recently. "If needed, I am willing to take the initiative for the purpose."

"It is the responsibility of both Congress and PDP to provide a popular government in Jammu and Kashmir as early as possible," he told reporters in Varanasi.

He appealed to both the parties to rise above party lines and provide a popular government in Jammu and Kashmir in the interest of the country and people of the state.

He appreciated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for strengthening the democracy by participating in the elections in large numbers.
