Bangalore: Barely two days before the Supreme Court is to hear the contempt petition
filed by Tamil Nadu against Karnataka Chief Minister, S M Krishna and two others, the
state has decided to file an application before the court seeking time to file its
replies.
Karnataka Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, D B Chandregowda told reporters
that since the notices on the second contempt of court petition reached the
respondents on October 16, the state needed time to finalise its replies.
The Supreme Court had directed Krishna, Karnataka Water Resources Minister, H K Patil
and Chief Secretary, Dr A Ravindra to file their counter affidavits to the contempt
petition before it on or before October 22.
Tamil Nadu in its second contempt of court petition filed before the Apex Court has
submitted that Karnataka has not honoured the court's September 3 and October 4 order
asking it to release water.
While by September 3 order, the Supreme Court directed Karnataka to release 1.25 TMC
ft of water daily to Tamil Nadu, the October 4 order asked it to maintain 0.8 TMC ft
water release.
Patil on October 21 had maintained that Karnataka has not disobeyed the Supreme Court
order.
Krishna and Patil are camping in New Delhi now.
