Youth Cong, NSUI bid to storm VHP office foiled
Tuesday, October 22 2002 20:17 Hrs (IST)

Guwahati: Angry Youth Congress and National Students Union of India (NSUI) members on October 22 attempted to break into offices of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protesting against the VHP leader, Praveen Tagodia's derogatory remark against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Official sources said that the attempt was foiled and about 434 of the protestors were arrested as they took out a rally from the Judges Field towards the VHP city office in the Pan Bazar area.

The protesters were released later in the day, the sources said.

Heavy police deployment was made to prevent any untoward incident at Pan Bazar as well as Uzan Bazar where the VHP state office is situated.

Lashing out at Togadia for using obnoxious language against the Congress president, the angry Youth Congress and NSUI members also burnt an effigy of Tagodia prior to their arrest.

The protestors had burnt an effigy of the VHP leader at the Congress headquarters on October 21 in the presence of senior party leaders and ministers.
