Panthers Party seeks Cong help in forming JK govt
Tuesday, October 22 2002 18:05 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Panthers Party chief Bhim Singh on October 22 asked Congress to support formation of a government headed by him in Jammu and Kashmir if no agreement on a coalition was reached between People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress.

Addressing a press conference, he released letter written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi seeking support in case her party failed to form a government.

He alleged that certain vested interests in New Delhi were against the formation of Congress government in the state and asked Gandhi to review the entire situation especially the "adamant attitude" of PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed.

Singh claimed that he had the support of nearly 30 more MLAs.

JKNPP has four members in the new Assembly.

"I will reveal them when the situation comes but let me make it clear that I had a fruitful discussion with senior National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah."

Asked whether Abdullah has given some assurance, he said the former Chief Minister's response was positive.

Singh said that such a coalition government would be beneficial in destroying terrorism and fundamentalism in the state.

He cautioned Congress against engineering defection saying it would be counter- productive.
