Mumbai: Incarcerated film actor Salman Khan on October 22 urged a sessions court to
grant him bail in a hit and run case as investigations were over and a chargesheet
had been filed against him.
This is the fifth time Salman is urging for bail. His plea for liberty has been
rejected four times since his arrest on September 28 after the actor had allegedly
rammed his vehicle into a bakery killing one person and injuring four others.
Salman's bail petition was filed by eminent criminal lawyer Harshad Ponda. It will
come up for hearing on October 23 before sessions judge P V Bavkar.
Urging for liberty, 37-year-old Salman pleaded that he was a popular hero in Hindi
films since last 14 years and an income tax payer. The actor said that he was one of
the breadwinners of his family and had roots in the city. As a cine artist, his
presence in Mumbai was essential.
Referring to prosecution's opposition to his bail in a sessions court, the actor said
that allegation of police about his tampering with witnesses was baseless.
Even the Supreme Court had laid down that allegation of tampering could not be a
ground to refuse bail unless it was substantiated by the prosecution, the actor's
petition said.
The actor said that chargesheet had been filed against him on October 21 in a
Magistrate's court and this was not a case which fell within the four corners of
section 304 (2) IPC.
Therefore, he should be granted bail.
