Developed nations 'cold' on climate change: NGOs
Thursday, October 24 2002 16:32 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on October 24 charged industrialised nations with not being forthcoming with funds to developing countries to deal with impacts of global warming even as they asked the Third World not to put roadblocks in the adaptation process.

On the second day of the 10-day UN conference on climate change, several NGOs, including from India, under the umbrella of Climate Action Network (CAN) told reporters that they regret that funding has not been realised yet, especially by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development comprising developed countries.

At the same time, developing countries should not block the adaptation process just because funds were not forthcoming as the consequences of not taking any action to reverse global warming could be "disastrous" to the whole humanity, Kate Hamption, director of CAN, said.

Noting that adaptation for the developing countries was the key solution and option for sustainable development, the NGOs said that it should be followed by mitigation of current level of greenhouse gases emission.

"For developing countries, the question of survival was the most important and only after that comes environment or mitigation, Kalipada Chatterjee of India-based NGO Development Alternatives said.

Linkages between climate change and sustainable development have been amply proved, he said, adding that high consumption lifestyle of some of the developed countries have created the problem of climate change.
