New Delhi: European Union (EU) hit out at the United States saying that others have
to foot the bill for the latter's refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on reducing
emission of greenhouse gases.
EU also said that it is looking at new alliances beyond the developed and developing
world framework to accelerate the use of renewable energy resources in the world.
"EU is already looking beyond 2012 and has reduced its emission by 3.5 per cent upto
2000 from the 1990 levels. The US has left the family and we are trying to convince
them that this is the best and only show in town," EU's head of division, climate
change, Thomas Becker, at the UN conference on climate change.
Speaking to reporters, Becker said that the EU is also putting in place the emission
trading mechanism (ETM) to make the greenhouse reduction mechanism cost effective.
However, he said that the middle income group among the developing countries should
also "start looking at their obligations towards cleaner environment, if not in
terms of targets of emission reduction than at least greater use of renewable
energy".
