Pune: Make shift opener Shreyas Khanolkar slammed an impressive 102 for his maiden
first-class century as the Railways prospered on the West Indies fielding lapses in
a warm-up match on Friday.
The tourists dropped three catches in the last session as national champions
Railways reached 179-1 at stumps in reply to its opponents' 449-8 declared on the
second day of a three-day game at the Nehru Stadium.
The 25-year-old Khanolkar put on 167 for the opening wicket with Murali Kartik (72
not out), who was let off three times in the slips during his 94-ball knock.
Tejinderpal Singh was batting on two.
The fielding lapses also added to the woes of the West Indies, who had dropped a
dozen chances in the first two Tests against India. The third and final Test begins
at Kolkata on October 30.
The Railways hardly missed the services of its regular openers as Khanolkar smashed
20 fours in his ninth first-class game to flay the West Indies attack during the big
stand with Kartik.
Specialist openers Amit Pagnis (thumb injury) and Sanjay Bangar (rested) both were
unavailable for this match. Left-handed Kartik, a lower-order batsman promoted to
open the innings, made the most of his chances as he cracked 13 fours in his half-
century.
Earlier, tail-enders Gareth Breese and Mahendra Nagamootoo helped the tourists
survive a mid-innings collapse with a 95-run stand for the unfinished ninth wicket.
The West Indies slipped to 354-8 after being strongly placed at 302-2 when
Nagamootoo joined Breese to repair the damage. Breese scored 57 not out with 10
boundaries, while Nagamootoo remained unbeaten with 39.
Off spinner Kulamani Parida troubled the West Indian batsmen the most, finishing
with 4-107 off 35 overs.
