Sunday, October 27 2002 17:25 Hrs (IST)

Kohima: Wrapping up his two-day sojourn in Nagaland which he described as "a most rewarding experience", President A P J Abdul Kalam on October 27 visited the historic Kohima war cemetery and paid homage at World War II memorial.

Before his departure for Delhi, Kalam, accompanied by Governor Shyamal Dutta and Chief Minister S C Jamir, visited the cemetery in the last leg of his three-day North East itinerary and signed the visitor's book.

The President, who met a cross-section of people of the Naga society during his engagements at Tuensang, Khuzama and Kohima, said that he had had a "rewarding experience" in meeting three generations of people. Kalam told the people of the state that they must create conditions in which "our children" could prosper.

Speaking at a banquet hosted by the Chief Minister on October 26 evening, the President said to transform Nagaland into an economically stronger and self-reliant state, its bio-diversity, hydro potential, agriculture and tourism sectors must be developed with value addition.

Jamir said that the President's frequent visits to the North East had helped mitigate the sense of isolation among the people.
