Pak angry at Blackwill's words, complains to Bush
Wednesday, October 30 2002 10:27 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Pakistan on October 30 reacted angrily to remarks made by US Ambassador to India, Robert Blackwill, that terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir were "entirely externally driven" and said it has taken up the issue with Bush Administration.

Such "ill-considered remarks only create complications," Pakistan Foreign Office said in a statement in Islamabad.

"As such, it would be better if the US Ambassador in New Delhi desists from pronouncing himself on Pakistan-India issues" and instead focuses on US-India relations, it said.

Blackwill, without naming Pakistan, on October 29 had said "India is a victim of terrorism. Problem in Kashmir is cross- border terrorism. In our judgement it (terrorism in Kashmir) is entirely external driven."

Pakistan has taken up the issue of Ambassador Blackwill's remarks with the US Ambassador in Islamabad, Nancy Powell, and the Pakistan Embassy in Washington has been asked to take up the matter with US authorities, the statement said.

"The American ambassador in Islamabad is obtaining transcript of what was actually said," it added.

Referring to a similar protest lodged by Pakistan against Blackwill a few months ago for confirming reports that infiltration of militants across the borders from Pakistan has increased ahead of the polls in Jammu and Kashmir, the statement said "Ambassador Blackwill has previously also made similar inaccurate assertions with a view to pleasing his Indian audience".
