'Terrorists planning abduction of Muslim leader'
Wednesday, October 30 2002 10:02 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Security agencies have received inputs suggesting that a Muslim political leader from Uttar Pradesh or Bihar could be abducted by a Pakistan-baked terrorist group prompting "sansitisation" of the security to Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) spokesman Mukhtar Abass Naqvi and MP Salim Sherwani.

The inputs suggested that the plan was being hatched by Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HUJI) terrorist group, responsible for the sensational American Centre attack in Kolkata, to seek release of their leader Nasarullah Langarial lodged in an Indian jail, top police sources said.

According to the inputs, some MP from Delhi, UP or Bihar might be abducted. But the suggestion about an MP from UP was repeated," a source told reporters.

Although the inputs did not specify the personality who could be abducted, police have identified Hussain, BJP spokesman and former Union Minister Mukhtar Abass Naqvi and Salim Sherwani as the possible targets, they said.

The security men protecting Hussain, who already has 'Z' grade security, and Naqvi and Sherwani, having 'Y' category security, have been "sansitised to the threat and asked to remain alert", the sources said.
