Guwahati: Two ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) militants were killed and as
many including a police commando injured in an encounter with police in the
Beltola-Survey area of the city on October 30.
Giving details of the incident, Guwahati city superintendent of police P C Neog said
a trap was laid on receiving information that the ultras were coming for collecting
extortion money from a contractor at his residence.
On seeing the police around, the ultras opened fire while making an attempt to
escape. In the retaliatory fire one ultra was killed on the spot, while his associate
ran into a house nearby.
Both the ultra and police exchanged fire for nearly two hours before he was killed,
Neog said adding the windows and parts of the house were damaged in the gun
battle.
One of the insurgents was identified as Speed Hazarika, while the commando and owner
of the house who were injured in the cross-fire were admitted to a hospital.
The entire area was cordoned off as the police was conducting investigations.
Security in the city was tightened.
Earlier this month NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) and ULFA militants
had attacked with grenades and mortars, the high security Dispur capital complex
which houses the State Assembly, the chief Minister's office and offices and
residences of ministers are located.
