Chennai: Tamil Nadu government employees and teachers called off their ten day old
strike on November 1 evening.
A decision in this regard was taken by the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu
Teachers Employees Organisations and Government Employees Organisations (JACTTEO-
GEO), which had spearheaded the strike, after a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief
Minister Jayalalithaa on November 1 evening.
Announcing the JACTTEO-GEO's decision, one of its conveners K Balasubramanaim told
reporters that the Chief Minister had assured them to consider their demands
sympathetically. The employees and teachers would resume duties from November
5.
The Chief Minister assured that the government would not apply the principle of 'no
work no pay' to the striking employees and their absence would be adjusted against
their leave, he said adding that the government had also agreed to pay the 4
per cent DA announced recently in cash.
Earlier the government had announced that only 3 per cent would be paid in cash and
3 per cent would be deposited in the employees PF account.
The strike was neither a success nor failure, he said.
The employees and teachers went on an indefinite strike from October 23 last,
demanding bonus and restoration of some benefits withheld by the government in 2001,
citing financial crunch.
