Overcrowded boat capsises in Bengal river; 11 dead

Kolkata: Eleven persons drowned and several others were missing when an overcrowded country boat capsised midstream in the Moni river near Raidighi, 45 km off Diamond Harbour, in South 24-Parganas district on November 3.

Most of the occupants of the boat, carrying about 70 persons from Raidighi to Kultali, either swam to safety or were rescued by the local people, the state's deputy inspector general (DIG-HQ) of police N C Ghosh said.

However, the police has launched a massive hunt for the missing. The mishap occurred at about 11:30 hours (IST), Ghosh said.

He said that the bodies were identified and sent for a post mortem. The police is looking for the boatman.
