Tuesday, November 5 2002 15:38 Hrs (IST)

Vadodara: The Centre has assured additional paramilitary forces for the smooth conduct of the December 12 Assembly polls in Gujarat, according to Minister of state for Home Gordhan Zadaphiya.

The additional chief secretary to the Home Department of the state government had discussed the issue with the Election Commission during his visit to New Delhi recently, Zadaphiya said.

The state chief secretary had also met the Central officials in Delhi in this regard, he said.

Meanwhile, a statewide alert has been sounded in the state following the incident in New Delhi on November 3 in which two terrorists were shot dead in an encounter with police, the Minister said.

"I have held a meeting with the director general of police V K Chakravarty and instructed all police commissioners and district superintendents of police to take necessary steps to maintain law and order," he said.

Police patrolling has been intensified at places of public gatherings and meeting venues, he said adding, constant police vigil is being maintained in wake of the recent terrorist attack at Akshardham temple.
