Jammu: Former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on November 8 threatened to sue Chief
Election Commissioner (CEC) J M Lyngdoh for his remarks that there was an attempt to
sabotage free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir even as Congress and CPM
(Communist Party of India-Marxist) demanded a probe into the issue terming it as
serious.
"If CEC has said so, he should substantiate it with evidence or else we will go for
legal proceedings against him," Abdullah told reporters in Jammu.
Describing Lyngdoh's statement as "unfortunate, irresponsible and unsubstantiated,"
Abdullah's son and National Conference president Omar Abdullah said the party was
contemplating filing a defamation suit against the CEC if he does not withdraw the
statement.
"The allegations made by the CEC are motivated and aimed at defaming the National
Conference government which facilitated the conduct of elections as per the
directions of
the Election Commission of India.
Lyngdoh in a TV programme had said that there was an attempt to sabotage free and
fair elections in the state by a few people, basically police, which would have
helped former
Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
