Ahmedabad: With tension prevailing in the city and pressure mounting on
administration, police in a major crackdown arrested 42 people from two religious
communities for November 7 mob violence in communally sensitive Gomtipur area.
Police sources said the arrests were made in an overnight crackdown for arson in
Gomtipur, Danilimda and Shahpur areas, where nine people were injured in group
clashes.
According to a first information report (FIR) lodged with Gomtipur police station,
mobs from both the communities "took to the streets to settle scores for the minor
scuffle on November 5".
Police fired 19 rounds and lobbed 101 tear-gas shells to bring the situation under
control, police said.
Additional commissioner of police Satish Verma said that adequate bandobust has been
made in the city and patrolling has been intensified.
In last two days violence at Jamalpur, Gomtipur and adjoining areas 16 people have
been injured.
With Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh set to arrive in Gujarat to make pre-
poll assessment, pressure seems to have mounted on the administration to take action
against the miscreants.
