New Delhi: A Bill is likely to be introduced in the coming winter session of
Parliament for granting full statehood to Delhi, Minister of State in the PMO Vijay
Goel said on November 8.
"We will try our best to introduce a Bill seeking to grant full statehood to Delhi
during the winter session of Parliament provided we reach a consensus with Congress
and other parties," he told reporters in New Delhi.
Goel said the Delhi Assembly had already adopted a resolution regarding granting of
statehood to Delhi and added that only the nitty-gritty had to be worked out. The
Home
Minister will go into the relevant details and study all the aspects.
BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) views on this are clear and there is no difference
within the party on the matter, he said.
Issues like the jurisdiction of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which includes
VIP areas, President Estate and Parliament House and the Delhi Police administration
have to be sorted out before the Bill is drafted. "We have to reach a consensus with
other parties," he said.
After the Delhi Assembly had adopted a resolution to this effect, the Delhi unit of
BJP held a function to claim that the resolution was originally BJP's and that the
Congress
government in Delhi was trying to take credit for something initially mooted by BJP.
