Siliguri: Fencing of 1,100 km of Indo-Bangla border in North Bengal is scheduled to
be completed by 2007, commissioner of Jalpaiguri division Debaditya Chakraborty said.
The fence once erected would effectively check trans-border crime and infiltration,
he told reporters at Jalpaiguri on November 8.
He said 107 km of fencing would be erected in the bordering districts of Jalpaiguri,
Coochbehar and parts of Darjeeling during this fiscal year.
To complete the entire fencing, 45 acres would be acquired in bordering districts,
he said, adding around 500 families residing within 150 yards from the zero line had
to be shifted and rehabilitated.
The district magistrates of Coochbehar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda
were asked to identify the families required to be shifted and suggest the mode of
their rehabilitation, he added.
