Sinha to attend 2nd Community of Democracies meet
Saturday, November 9 2002 16:30 Hrs (IST)

Seoul: External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha is arriving in Seoul on November 10 to attend the second ministerial conference of the Community of Democracies which is set to issue two separate declarations on combating terrorism and supporting Democracies, official sources said on November 9.

During the three-day conference, Sinha will be co-chairing with the Czech Republic a round table on "Media and Democracy", joint secretary, United Nations with the Ministry of External Affairs, B S Prakash, said.

During his visit, Sinha is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with South Korean Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister M Choi Sung Hong and some other Foreign Ministers of the participating countries.

"The threat that terrorism poses to Democracies and the special vulnerabilities of open societies are likely to come under focus," an official source said.

The meeting is also taking place in the backdrop of the deadly bomb blast last month in Bali, Indonesia.

Four ministerial round tables on consolidating Democratic institutions, regional co- operation to promote Democracy, media and Democracy and co-ordinating Democracy assistance would be held during the meeting.

Foreign Ministers from 118 Democratic nations across the world have been invited to attend the conference as full participants. They are expected to exchange views on measures for multilateral co-operation at the regional and global levels, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official said.

The Community of Democracies is an international coalition of the Democratic countries to foster co-operation for the protection and consolidation of Democracy. It was launched at a ministerial meeting in Warsaw in June 2000 in which 103 countries participated and nations like US, Poland, Czech Republic, South Africa and India took active part.
