Rebel candidate allegedly roughed up by BJP leader
Saturday, November 9 2002 15:23 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Arms dealer Suresh Nanda, put up by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dissident Legislators for Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly roughed up by BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, also a candidate for an Upper House seat, and his supporters inside the room of the returning officer.

The incident reportedly took place when Nanda was submitting documents to returning officer R P Pandey in connection with objections raised over his nomination filed on November 8, sources said.

Nanda and Naqvi, who was present there, reportedly had an altercation, they said.

Naqvi later told reporters he had no altercation with Nanda. Sources said Nanda suffered injuries on his head.

Nanda was not immediately available for comments.

Congress Legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari on November 8 raised some technical objections over Nanda's nomination papers and had sought their rejection.

The objections reportedly pertained to Nanda's address and the affidavit submitted by him.

Nanda reportedly sought time till 1600 hours on November 9 for filing his reply to the objections.
