Madurai: The Melur Taluk in Madurai district would probably be the first one in the
country where e-education would take off soon in seven schools through the
project "Sustained Access to Rural India".
According to district officials, with the proposed introduction of e-education,
there would not be any problem for the students in the rural belt to get in touch
with the teachers even after the office hours.
The teachers, who would stay in the select schools after the working hours would
clear the doubts of the students online. The students through the Internet kiosks
would also be able to get access to education oriented web sites under the project,
the officials said.
The project would help the students get acquainted with Internet, e-mail and
operation of the computers in general.
The officials said efforts were being taken to provide computers in 45 villages
where Internet kiosks were functioning. A study was being conducted on the impact of
the project outside the schools.
Based on the report of the project Wireless Local Loop (WLL) based cordless
digitally enhanced telephony concept would be introduced in other villages, the
officials said.
Some self-help groups also had applied for setting up Internet kiosks. The officials
said that efforts were being taken to give old question papers of entrance tests for
professional colleges to the rural students through the
kiosks.
