Sunday, November 10 2002 16:42 Hrs (IST)

Barasat (West Bengal): A five-year old child was charred to death and ten persons, including three women and a fire fighter, sustained injuries in a fire that broke out in a chemical godown at North 24 Parganas' Bamunmora village, about seven km from Barasat, police said.

The fire broke out around 10:30 hours (IST) at the sprawling godown and was brought under control by six fire engines after about two hours, fire brigade sources said.

The reason behind the blaze was yet to be known, the police said.

The dead child belonged to the godown's security guard, who lived at the premises along with his family, the police said, adding the injured included the man and his wife.

Four injured were rushed to R G Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata for emergency treatment, the police said.

The godown was used to store and distribute thinner for colour pigment. Its owner was yet to be contacted, the police said.

Senior district police officials have rushed to the spot and the arterial Taki Road, adjacent to the godown, was closed to traffic for sometime, the police added.
