Madurai: An All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) functionary was hacked to death and two others were assaulted by an eight-member gang following which tension prevailed in Krishnapuram village near Rajapalayam near Madurai.

Shops in Krishnapuram were closed on November 9 evening following the killing of the local AIADMK secretary Selvaraj whose body has been sent for post mortem, police said.

Police had been deployed in the area even as situation was stated to be fully under control.

According to police enmity existed between a group of residents in Krishnapuram village and some residents of the nearby Rajapalayam town after a clash when a resident of Rajapalayam was hacked during a local festival held last month.

Police suspect that the assailants were hired by the person who was injured in the clash to settle scores. Some persons were taken into custody for questioning on November 10.
