'Police didn't enter sanctum of Golden Temple'
Monday, November 11 2002 15:26 Hrs (IST)

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on November 11 said police "did not enter the Darbar Sahab" in Golden Temple Complex at Amritsar on November 10 and only went to the guest house in the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) Complex.

Addressing a press conference here, Singh denied reports in a section of the media that police had entered Darbar Sahab (the sanctum sanctorum).

The government is duty bound to maintain peace, law and order in the wake of "disturbing and perturbing" reports of threats and counter-threats from different factions, he added.

Singh said, "we have made foolproof arrangements to ensure a peaceful poll of the SGPC Executive Committee. About 1,200 miscreants of different factions have been taken into preventive custody".

He said that Union Ministers, including Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, coming to Amritsar for the SGPC poll, will be treated as "state guests".

Shiromani Akali Dal president Prakash Singh Badal will not be allowed to take his NSG security guards beyond the circuit house, he said, adding voters of all the factions will be allowed to proceed to the election venue.
