CBI confident about Salem's extradition: Advani
Tuesday, November 12 2002 20:20 Hrs (IST)

Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani New Delhi: CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) is confident that it would be able to get the underworld don and main accused in 1993 Mumbai bomb blast Abu Salem from Portugal, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani said in New Delhi on November 12.

"Only a few days back the CBI Director (P C Sharma) had reported to me the latest position and he is confident that we will be able to get him," Advani told reporters.

He was replying to a question about the 90-days judicial remand of Salem in Portugal, which will expire in December.

Salem was arrested in Lisbon on September 18 along with a small time bollywood actress and his girlfriend Monica Bedi following a Red Corner notice issued by the Interpol at the behest of the CBI.

The CBI had sent a three-member team comprising additional director Vijay Shankar, Superintendent of Police O P Chatwal and its legal head S K Sharma to pursue his deportation from Portugal.

Asked whether another team would be going to Portugal, Advani said, "There is no new team going to Portugal. They (Portuguese authorities) had themselves indicated that it will take sometime as the whole legal process is such."

India had earlier made a request for deportation of Salem but Portugal asked New Delhi to make the extradition request citing some legal provisions of that country.
