'Judicial panel probable solution to CJI's concern'
Tuesday, November 12 2002 13:04 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani has said that the National Judicial Commission (NJC) for appointment of judges in higher judiciary has acceptance among political parties.

"We will discuss the matter with other political parties. There is a wider consensus for NJC among political parties," he said when his attention was drawn to the recent remarks of chief justice of India (CJI) G B Pattanaik that the commission was an "unworkable" concept.

Asked for his comments on the concern expressed by the CJI over corruption in judiciary, Advani said that the government would consider any suggestion given by the judiciary to rid the menace. "The NJC could be an answer to that also," he added.

On the suggestion of the CJI that suitable amendments could be brought into the Contempt of Courts Act to make truth a defence in proceedings under the Act, the Deputy Prime Minister said, "I for one see no objection to that proposal. It will be deliberated upon by the political parties."
