Amjad's sons release book as tribute to father
Tuesday, November 12 2002 12:52 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: It was a unique tribute to Ustad Amjad Ali Khan when his sons and disciples Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash presented the sarod maestro with his pictorial biography written by them.

"Abba - God's Greatest Gift to Us", an intimate anecdotal biography of the artist presents a glimpse into Khan's relationship with his father and guru Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, wife Subbhalakshmi and two sons, including some interesting insights into his love life and "disappointment" with his disciples.

The book was presented to Khan and Subbhalakshmi by their sons, who are artists in their own right, at a gathering on November 12.

Dedicating his achievements to his gurus, an emotional Khan, who described the book as a "surprise" gift, said, "Music is not my profession but passion."

Ayaan, the younger brother, confessed that the duo had their moments of hesitation while venturing into the project.

"I hope we have been able to grasp the essence of our father's life and done justice to him as he is looked upon, revered and respected as an artist and as a person by the world," he said.

Amjad said, "I always reminded my children that they have to represent the Indian culture, values and tradition."

"Their mother played an important role in this regard in their lives. A mother is the greatest of all gurus," he added.
