New Delhi: Defence Minister George Fernandes on November 14 sought to justify the
VHP's (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) criticism of the Election Commission (EC) for banning
the proposed "Padashahi yatra" in Gujarat saying freedom of speech is guaranteed by
the Constitution.
"Freedom of speech is guaranteed by the Constitution without any rider being attached
to it. They are using their freedom of speech," he told reporters when asked whether
it was proper for any political or social organisation to attack the EC.
Initially, Fernandes declined to comment saying there was no need for the Samata
Party to have a view on every issue.
He was talking to the media after welcoming to the party fold Rishi Pal Ambavat,
president of Bhartiya Kisan Union and other office-bearers of the organisation.
