New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha on November 14 sought to dispel
the view that government's foreign policy was ''Pakistan-centric'', saying New
Delhi's statements relating to that country were only in response to the anti-India
tirade resorted to by Islamabad.
The Minister's remarks came at the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative
Committee of External Affairs after several members contended that the foreign policy
seemed to be directed only at Pakistan, sources said.
They argued that the Indian leaders raised Indo-Pak issues with every dignitary
coming to India as also on their visits abroad and in effect giving importance as
also needlessly internationalising the measure.
Some felt that repeatedly voicing concerns over Pakistan-sponsored cross-border
terrorism and infiltration with the international community had not served the
desired
purpose.
Sinha pointed out that Pakistan never missed an opportunity to attack India
particularly at the international fora.
He said while India's statement at the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) was
restrained and responsible, Pakistan had used the forum for another onslaught against
it.
The Minister made it clear that government had no intention whatsoever of
internationalising the Indo-Pak standoff.
