"But the naxals, hiding in a dense forest situated at the borders of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra and heavily armed with sophisticated weaponry, without provocation, fired at the police party which retaliated," Ramulu said adding, five naxals were killed in the ensuing encounter which continued for half-an-hour from 10.00 am.

"We could find out the number of naxalites through the kit bags recovered from the site, he said adding 11 weapons including two American 306 spring field rifle, one 30 US carbine, two 303 rifle, two revolvers and one DBBL gun were recovered from the site.

When asked for further details, he said, "We are in constant touch with our men on wireless as they are operating in a remote and thick forest area."
