China hails Musharraf's 're-election' as President
Monday, November 18 2002 10:27 Hrs (IST)

Beijing: Welcoming Pervez Musharraf's re-assumption to the office of Pakistan President, China has backed the military ruler's stewardship of the country during the last three years, saying the "re-election has demonstrated the trust and support for him from the Pakistani people".

"Over the past few years, the Pakistani people, under the leadership of General Musharraf, have realised national stability and development after overcoming various difficulties under a complicated and changing situation both at home and abroad," Chinese President Jiang Zemin said in his congratulatory message after Musharraf's swearing-in.

Jiang also firmly backed the military ruler and said, "General Musharraf's re- election as the President of Pakistan has demonstrated the trust and support for him from the Pakistani people."

The Chinese leader expressed the belief that Pakistan will enjoy "further development" under the leadership of Musharraf, the state media has reported.

Jiang called for further consolidation of Sino-Pakistani "all-weather" friendship.

"China cherishes its traditional friendly relations with Pakistan."

Musharraf had greeted the new Chinese leadership after the sweeping changes effected in the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) last week.
