Lucknow: Congress urged Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri to direct the
Mayawati government to seek a fresh vote of confidence by convening a special
session of the Assembly claiming the state government has been reduced to a minority
as proved by the result of November 18 Legislative Council bye-election.
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, leader of the Congress Legislature Party
Pramod Tewari said the result of the Council election had proved that the government
had been reduced to a minority as the ruling coalition's nominee failed to secure
202 votes in the 402-member House.
The Governor should direct the Mayawati government to prove its majority on the
floor of the house, he said.
The memorandum alleged that the government, instead of resolving the problems of the
people of the state, was trying to divide the society in the name of caste and
religion.
Tewari urged the Governor to direct the government to enhance the sugarcane support
price, clear dues of the farmers and restart the sugar mills.
