Friday, November 22 2002 17:31 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was on November 22 shot dead in broad daylight by an unidentified militant in the heart of the city, official source said.

Armed with silencer-fitted pistol, the militant appeared a busy Naaz crossing around 14:45 IST (IST) and fired several shots at constable M Gundapa of 98 battalion who was on duty in the market, the sources said.

The jawan was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said.

BSF immediately sealed the entire area and a manhunt has been launched to nab the militant involved in the incident, the sources said.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
