NCP urges for Narendra Modi's arrest under POTA
Friday, November 22 2002 20:06 Hrs (IST)

Patna: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary, Tariq Anwar called for immediate dismissal of the Gujarat government and arrest of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) in connection with the spate of communal violence in the state.

Talking to reporters, Anwar said the committee headed by retired judge of Supreme Court, Justice Krishna Aiyer and the National Human Rights Commission had severely indicted the Narendra Modi dispensation for its alleged failure to check the communal violence, that erupted after Godhra incident.

"Narendra Modi should be booked under POTA without any further delay and his government be dismissed for failure to restore peace and amity in Gujarat," he said.

Anwar said NCP was trying to firm up electoral alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) of former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda and Samajwadi Janata party headed by former Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar, to defeat the communal forces in Gujarat.

He said his party planned to file its candidates in 125 Assembly constituencies in Gujarat.

He also called for banning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal.
