Centre-NSCN talks likely in December, Zoramthanga
Saturday, November 23 2002 12:41 Hrs (IST)

Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga who is a mediator in the peace talks between the NSCN-IM (National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah) and the Centre, on November 23 said that political level talks between the two sides might be held during December in New Delhi.

Zoramthanga said that a detailed programme for the proposed talks in New Delhi was being worked out by the two sides.

He, however, said the exact date for the talks would be fixed according to the convenience of both the parties.

"I suggested to both the NSCN (I-M) leadership in Bangkok and the Centre that the NSCN should first consult the people of Nagaland before beginning talks as was done between the Mizo National Front led by Laldenga and the Centre," he said.

He also suggested that not only the political demands of the rebels but the demands of the Naga people should be discussed in the talks.

Both the Centre and the NSCN leadership had agreed to his suggestions, he said.

A former rebel leader himself, Zoramthanga expressed optimism about the outcome of the talks saying, "both the Centre and the NSCN were serious and have positive approaches".

He, however, said his role in the Naga peace deal would be to create mutual trust and understanding between the two parties for conducive atmosphere for the talks.

The Mizo Chief Minister had met the NSCN (I-M) leaders including Th Muivah and Issac Chisi Swi in the Thai capital to find a peaceful solution to the Naga problem.
