Chennai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on November 27 demanded an explanation
from the Congress party on the increasing incidents of terrorist attacks in Jammu
and Kashmir after the People's Democratic Party (PDP)-Congress coalition government
came to power in that state.
BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters here that the state government's
decision to release terrorists had resulted in an increase in terrorist
activities. "The Congress owes an explanation to the people for the folly it has
committed," he said.
Referring to Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko's arrest
under Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) for his alleged pro-Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE) speech at a public meeting at Tirumangalam in June last, he said
the party was of the view that POTA had
been 'misused' in Vaiko's case. However, he refused to comment further, stating the
matter was sub-judice.
Venkaiah Naidu said he would meet Vaiko at the central prison at Vellore on November
28.
On BJP national secretary L Ganesan's recent remarks that the Dravida Munnetra
Kazhagam (DMK) was slowly distancing itself from the BJP and that the AIADMK was
coming closer to the party, Naidu said the DMK was a partner of the National
Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre. "We will work together," he
added.
