Puri seer asks parties to keep religion off politics
Thursday, November 28 2002 17:42 Hrs (IST)

Jammu: Calling for a correction in the political system "that breeds violence", the Puri seer Jagadguru Nischalananda Saraswati on November 28 warned against the use of religion by political organisations to further their ends.

"We must correct the political and administrative system, which breeds terrorism by churning out militants," the Jagadguru, who is Shankracharya of Govardhanpeetham, told reporters.

While appealing to militants to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream, he said the aim should be to take on those people and forces that brainwash youth and make deadly terrorists out of them.

The seer also came down heavily on the political parties for "churning out" a number of so-called Shankaracharyas for their vested interests.

Pointing out that there were 60 odd people "projecting themselves as Shankaracharyas across the country", the Puri seer said, "These have been produced by political parties to further "their interests".

Referring to the Shiv Sena proposal of formation of suicide squads by Hindus, he said it must not be allowed to take shape.
