Students march turns violent in Kerala, 40 injured
Thursday, November 28 2002 18:45 Hrs (IST)

Kozhikode: At least 40 persons, including 11 police personnel, were injured when a march taken out by the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists turned 'violent', resulting in police bursting tear gas shells and resorting to 'mild' lathicharge in Kozhikode, Kerala on November 28.

Police said the SFI activists, including girl students, hurled stones at the police as soon as their procession reached the revenue divisional office, Kozhikode, their destination.

The sources said police used 'mild' lathicharge and burst tear gas shells to disperse the agitators.

The injured, including a circle inspector, a woman sub-inspector and nine constables, had been admitted to various hospitals, the sources said.

The SFI activists, as part of their state-wide protest, were agitating, against the United Democratic Front (UDF) government's attempts to 'commercialise' and 'communalise' the education sector in the state.
