Guwahati: Armed villagers in Assam's Kamrup district killed an Army Major and a
jawan of the Assam Regiment mistaking them to be militants and in a reprisal six, of
the villagers were shot down and eight injured by the Army personnel on December 1.
Police sources said that a patrol party of the Assam Regiment was proceeding to
Barkhala for a raid when people of Athyapra Deharkuria under Hajo police station
attacked them taking them to be militants, killing the Major and the jawan on the
spot.
The other Defence personnel present quickly retaliated by gunning down six of the
attackers and injuring eight.
The injured have been admitted to G M C Hosptial, the sources said. Senior police
officials have rushed to the site and investigations were on.
