Moscow: Echoing India's stand, Russia has told Pakistan to end cross-border
terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and dismantle terrorist infrastructure on its soil
for the resumption of a political dialogue.
"Honouring its commitments by Pakistan to stop infiltration of militants across line
of control in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as liquidation of terrorist
infrastructure on its soil, would create the necessary conditions for the resumption
of a peaceful dialogue between the two countries," Kremlin Foreign Policy Aide
Sergei Prikhodko told reporters.
Prikhodko said that President Vladimir Putin, who would be arriving in New Delhi on
December 3 for Indo-Russian summit, would focus on combating international
terrorism, including the situation in Kashmir, in his talks with Indian
leaders.
"Russia believes that normalisation of relations between India and Pakistan is in
the interest of these states and would strengthen stability and security in the
subcontinent," Prikhodko said, underscoring the need for the implementation of
Pakistani obligations on the ground to create a conducive atmosphere for the
resumption of the bilateral dialogue.
In his interview to the Russian media, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee also
reiterated India's desire for friendly relations with Pakistan, but ruled out
resumption of any dialogue with Islamabad till it quits the path of supporting cross-
border terrorism.
At the first session of the Russian-Pak joint working group (JWG) on combating
international terrorism scheduled for December 2, Moscow is expected to strongly
convey its message to Islamabad.
