High alert in UP after reports of terror strikes
Wednesday, December 4 2002 16:54 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Security all over Uttar Pradesh has been beefed up in the wake of intelligence reports of possible terrorist strikes to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

"We are ready to meet any eventuality. Security has been tightened all over the state with additional para-military forces and Rapid Action Force deployed in all sensitive districts," Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Vikram Singh told reporters in Lucknow on December 4.

"This year, December 6 is likely to be a trying time for the state administration for two reasons--one, it is a Friday and two, Eid is very much likely to fall on that day," he said.

Moreover, the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) has given a call to celebrate it as 'Shaurya Diwas' while Barbri Masjid Action Committee has called to observe it as 'a day of sorrow', Singh said.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer said there were some reports, corroborated by the Intelligence Bureau, that terrorists may target the makeshift temple in Ram Janmabhoomi complex or any part of the twin city of Ayodhya and Faizabad.

Security has already been tightened in Ayodhya and Faizabad with no vehicular traffic being allowed inside Ayodhya since December 4. The traffic has been re- routed through national highway, a police officer said. No outsider would be allowed to enter Ayodhya town on December 6, he added.
