Wednesday, December 4 2002 17:20 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Bhutan government has assured that it would not allow insurgent groups to use its territory for activities prejudicial to India's interests, Minister of State for Home I D Swami told the Rajya Sabha on December 4.

The Minister, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, said the government was aware of the existence of camps of Indian insurgent groups including National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Bhutan which were being used by them for safe havens, sanctuary, training purposes and launching of operations against Indian civilians and security forces.

The Assam government has also drawn the attention of the Central government about their activities, he said.

The matter regarding removal of camps of Indian insurgent groups from Bhutan territory has been taken up from time to time with the Bhutan government, he said, adding the issue was also discussed in detail during the visits of External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha in August 2002 and Foreign Secretary in October to Bhutan.
