Srinagar: In a first-ever symbolic move, Pakistan-backed terrorist group Lashkar-e-
Toiba (LeT) on December 4 declared a four-day unilateral ceasefire in Jammu and
Kashmir from the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The state government, while hoping that the announcement is "genuine", welcomed
it.
The LeT "will not attack Indian forces throughout Jammu and Kashmir as a goodwill
gesture in view of Eid-ul-Fitr", the group's spokesman Abu Huzaifa told local news
agency CNS in a faxed statement.
He said even political leaders who are on the hitlist of the outfit would be spared
during the ceasefire.
Huzaifa said the ceasefire would come into effect a day ahead of Eid and continue
till the third day of the Muslim festivities.
"This is a welcome and positive step as it will help save many lives. It would have
been welcomed more heartily if it had been for the entire holy month of Ramazan,"
Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma said.
