New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is using the 'Hindutva card' to shore up its
performance in Gujarat as it is facing an uphill task at the hustings, former Prime
Minister H D Deve Gowda said on December 7.
"Hindutva card is being used as the last weapon by the BJP" to revive their lost
ground, he said.
Stating that he would be campaigning in Gujarat where his party had put up a few
candidates, he said that his party would not oppose the candidates fielded by
secular Parties.
"My fielding some candidates does not mean I am helping directly or indirectly the
BJP," the former Premier said.
He said, to ensure minimum split of non-BJP votes, a direct fight would have been
ideal and in that case Congress should have taken the lead and all secular parties
should have supported it. "But my suggestion was not taken seriously," he regretted.
Asked to comment on former Prime Minister V P Singh's appeal to people to vote for
Congress to crush communal forces, Gowda said Singh's fight was against 'Hindutva'.
