Ahmedabad: The President A P J Abdul Kalam would honour the valiant National
Security Guards (NSG) commando Surjan Singh Bhandari for his bravery during the
Akshardham operation, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani on December 7 said.
Advani, during his quick visit to the civil hospital where the comatose commando is
admitted after he sustained serious injuries in the operation, told his relatives
that a medal of bravery would be awarded by the President to the commando on
December 12, family sources of the commando said.
The commando's mother would accept the award, they said.
Bhandari's aged mother was not informed about her brave son's critical condition for
a long time with the hope that he would recover soon.
"However, since none of his brothers can leave his (Bhandari) side, our mother will
go to New Delhi to accept the award," the sources said.
She might also visit Ahmedabad since she has not seen him during the past two
months, the sources added.
Bhandari, who has been in coma for over two months and is surviving on life support
system, was seriously injured during a fierce gun-battle with terrorists, who had
stormed the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar on September 24.
