Bangalore: Within hours after recovery of body of Janata Dal – United (JD-U) leader H Nagappa, the special task forces of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu launched a hunt for forest brigand Veerappan.

"We have started the operations immediately from today," a grim-looking Karnataka Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters while announcing that the body of Nagappa was recovered near Chengadi in Chamarajnagar district.

Chief Minister S M Krishna, who is in Delhi, spoke to his Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalithaa and both decided to launch the operations, Kharge said.

"Those responsible should be caught dead or alive," he said.

Karnataka STF had suspended the operations after the government came under pressure from the Opposition parties and pontiffs of various mutts following the kidnapping of Nagappa.
